What are the risks of the internet? Look out!!! Someone is spying you!!!

On Wednesday we dealt with a very debated issue: the risks people could ran in using the Internet. The main problems we can meet with are: viruses, online fraud, Internet addiction, dangerous encounters, hackers and the problem of data protection and sexual harassment such as stalking.

To be sincere, I think that the technological findings of the last few years are showing their side effects. It is important to use the Web, being aware that we are not alone there, but that millions of people from all over the world are using it at the same time. I'm not an Internet expert. Therefore, I am afraid of it. As matter of fact, in the “sea” of the Web there are hackers and have specific intention of damaging other who are not so aware of the risks of a regardless use.
As far as Msn, Facebook , and other social networks are concerned, I use them to keep in touch with some friends of mine who live abroad. Instead of waiting months before answering their mails, I prefer using Skype or Msn and reply to them in a few minutes. As they are not always online I use Facebook to let them have my messages. My friends and I usually do not write on our public pages, but we prefer creating a private conference. It is important to be careful using the Internet. Privacy invasion is a problem we have to prevent maybe through firewalls, antivirus and antispyware, softwares.
I strongly believe that parents should teach their children how to use the Internet and how to surf correctly. Safety measures are necessary to protect them and their ingenuousness and inexperience. Beside this, it is important, and this is addressed to everyone, not to become addicted, as it happens with the mobile phones. There is a life outside and everything has to be taken with moderation.

Phishing Scams in Plain English

  1. Hi Elena,

    I read your post and I think we share the same viewpoint. I think that your title is catchy! Well done! May I suggest you add some links to the keywords you mentioned? I think it would be a great idea!

    Unfortunately, as I wrote in my post, the Internet could be considered a public place, a sort of virtual square where you can find your friends (many), but also some enemies (let’s hope not too many). While with the former chatting is a pleasure, with the latter it isn’t. Moreover, among the so-called “enemies” we should also list the hackers and the people who just want to “phish” your passwords or user IDs to perpetrate online frauds. I think that the e-tivity of last week was useful since it gave us the opportunity to reflect on how we use the Internet and how our data could be used by other people.
    As far as children are concerned, I think that it is important that they start using the Internet with the supervision of an adult. As we discussed in class, pedophiles are just one of the worst online meetings a child can fall victim of.
    Anyway, the Internet is also useful for many other things such as paying your bills online, read online newspapers or watching funny videos on YouTube.
    See you soon,
    Have a nice Sunday,

    Francy

    PS: here below you can find some things I noticed while reading your post.

    • Check the spelling of “delt”. The right verb is dealt;
    • I think the correct verb here is run into (= to experience difficulties) Ex: Be careful not to run into trouble. Or you can also use the verb “to face” (the risks people face when they use the Internet) or the verb “to encounter” (= to experience something, especially something unspleasant or difficult, while you are trying to do something else);
    • “To meet with” or “to come across”;
    • I’d say viruses (plural);
    • Put a comma after “to be sincere”;
    • “I am a little bit afraid of if I think that”: I think this is a cut and paste mistake or maybe you wanted to say “I am a little bit afraid of the Internet, especially when I think that in the “sea” of the Web there are...”;
    • people who are experts: why don’t you say computer experts or hackers?;
    • Intent is used in legal and formal context, maybe you could say intention;
    • I’d write “of damaging” instead of “of damage”;
    • What a long sentence! 55 words! I think the maximum for an English person is around 20. “I don’t think to be an expert of the Internet and I am a little bit afraid of if I think that, there, in the “sea” of the Web there are people who are experts and have specific intent of damage other who are not so aware of the risks of a regardless use”. I would try to rephrase it. For example: I don’t think to be = I am not.  I am not an Internet expert. Therefore, I am afraid of it. As a matter of fact, in the “sea” of the Web there are many hackers, too. Their intention is ...;
    • I think the correct word in this context is social networks (noun);
    • Reply to, so it becomes reply to them. Or “I answer to their questions by chat”;
    • As they are not always online, (I would put a comma after online). Then, I think that “as” is one of the magic words to be used sparingly because in some sentences it can cause misunderstandings. However, here it is not the case;
    • I would say “I use Facebook to let them have my messages”;
    • “As they are not always online I use Facebook and I leave there some messages, but not in my or their profile page but in a conference we created only for ourselves. It is important to be careful using the Internet”: I would split this long sentence. I use Facebook to let them have my messages. My friends and I usually do not write on our public pages, but we prefer creating a private conference (in this way you can also emphasize the difference between public and private);
    • I would add “softwares” after “antispyware”;
    • Should learn or should teach?;
    • I would say “as it happens with mobile phones” (plural, general meaning)

    BYE!

  2. Hi Elena!
    I've just read your post and I agree with most of what you wrote. The always increasing variety of services provided by the Internet makes it more and more attractive for everyone. Internet is an important source of information and a practical means of communication, but it can hide risks. The importance is to use it consciously. Avoiding the problem is never a solution, even if it may be the easiest way!! Knowing the risks, instead, can help facing them in a responsible way.
    As regards our language feedback, here are some suggestions:
    -I'd replace "to meet with" simply with: THE MAIN PROBEMS WE CAN HAVE, or COME ACROSS;
    I'd use the plural also in frauds..
    I re-read it but I think it's all.
    See you soon;
